Palangkaraya can easily be reached from Jakarta, Banjarmasin, Samarinda, Balikpapan and other points on the island by air. The town has become the center of government, trade and education of the province. The Regional Museum of Palangkaraya contains a collection of historical and cultural interest from all over Central Kalimantan.

Central Kalimantan

Central Kalimantan is the biggest province on the island, covering 153,800 square kilometers, most of which is jungle. The northern area is mountainous and difficult to reach. The central area is dense tropical forest. The southern area is swampy and has many rivers. The climate is hot and humid. The tree Dayak sub-tribes who inhabit this province are the Ngaju, Ot Danum, and Ma’anyan Ot Siang. The Ngaju are nomadic, adhering to old Kaharinga n religion, which is a form of ancestor worship mixed with elements of animism. With approximately 6,000 people, the Ot Danum is the largest among the tree subtribes. The Ot Danum live in longhouses which sometimes have as many as 50 rooms. The women are known for their skill in plaiting rattan, palm leaves, and bamboo. Like other Dayaks, the men are good hunters, using simple tools. The art of Central Kalimantan clearly bears the marks of Kaharingan religion, which is the traditional belief of the Dayaks in the hinterland of Central Kalimantan. Building styles, statues and carvings have been influenced by the Chinese, and Hindu-Javanese. Aside from their aesthetic properties, many objects are appreciated for their magic value.

Day 01. Arrival – City Tour – Check in hotel

The group will be picked up at Tjilik Riwut airport and go to the hotel to check in. next, go for lunch in Traditional food restaurant. Next, the group will visit Museum Balanga to see about Dayak Cultural and Ethnography. Then, visit to Ransel Buku program in Petuk Katimpun village which is this program bring local children to love books,environment, culture, etc (we would like to suggest you to donate some education book or story books, stationary,etc to this program). Back to Palangkaraya  for seeing souvenir shop and dinner.

Day 02. Orangutan Conservation – Traditional Dayak Dance

In the morning after breakfast, we visit the Pre-Release Orangutan to see Orangutan conservation with small motorboat. We then visit local project “BOSF (Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation)” to watch some video about the impact of deforestation for Orangutans. Lunch and Back to Palangkaraya. Then, visit traditional Dayak Dance.

Day 03. Sebangau National Park

We go to Sebangau National Park for Jungle trekking in peat swamps. We can see the beautiful view from black lake, vegetation, wildlife (can’t be guaranteed). PS. lunch box is provided by us. Then, back to Palangkaraya and dinner.

Day 04. Check out hotel – Transfer to airport

Breakfast at the hotel. Check out hotel. Then we take you to the airport. End of tour.

Day 1 Pangkalanbun – Kumai – Tanjung Puting

Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, you will be picked up by our guide and transferred to Kumai. Boat up the river to explore the great mangrove, nipah palm, and wildlife along the Sekonyer river while lunch is prepared on the boat. Late afternoon, observe the proboscis monkey and other primates along the river. The boat is traditional boat wooden river boat about 14 m x 2,5m with roof which forms the upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. Simple mattresses, pillows, meals, bottled mineral water, mosquito nets, simple toilet and shower are available on boat. Overnight on the boat. (L, D)

Day 2 Camp Leakey

After breakfast, 4d3n Orangutan Tanjung Puting Trip will be continued by boat up the river to Camp Leakey. It is a research center where the older orangutans are reintroduced to the rain forest. After that, you may take soft trekking in the rainforest to spot other wildlife. Go back to the boat for lunch and then see the orangutans being fed around 2 pm. Overnight on the boat. (B, L, D).

Day 3 Pondok Tangguy – Pesalat – Tanjung HarapanOrangutan

After breakfast, boat down the river to Pondok Tangguy which is a rehabilitation center for the ex-captive orangutans and see feeding time around 9 am. Continue to Pesalat where you will have the opportunity to trek in the forest to observe the wildlife and see reforestation project. You can also plant a baby tree there. In the afternoon, visit Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center to witness another feeding time around 3 pm. After that, you may visit a village near the national park. Boat down the river to the Nipah palm area where you can see the beautiful fireflies when the weather is good. Overnight on the boat. (B, L, D)

Day 4 Tanjung Puting – Pangkalan Bun Airport

After breakfast, boat down to Kumai and transfer by car to Pangkalan Bun airport for your next destination. (B)

3 Days 2 Nights Orang Utan Tanjung Puting Itinerary

Tanjung Puting Day 01: Aiport – Kumai – Tanjung Puting

On arrival at Pangkalan Bun airport, we will pick you up and then drive to Kumai by taxi (approximately 30 minutes), passing several villages. Upon arrival in Kumai, boat up the river to explore the great mangrove, nipah palm, and wildlife along the Sekonyer river while lunch is prepared on the boat. Late afternoon, observe the proboscis monkey and other primates along the river. The boat is traditional boat wooden river boat about 14 m x 2,5 m with roof which forms the upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. Simple mattresses, pillows, meals, bottled mineral water, mosquito nets, simple toilet and shower are available on boat. Overnight on the boat. (L, D)

Day 02: Pondok Tanggui – Camp Leakey – Nipa Area

After early breakfast, boat up to Pondok Tanggui Camp to witness orangutan feeding around 9 am. Upon arrival at Pondok Tanggui, we walk to feeding area. After orangutan feeding, we can take a short trekking in the forest then proceed to Camp Leakey which takes about 1,5 – 2 hours by boat. After lunch, you will have a chance to take another short trekking or see information center before witnessing orangutans’ feeding time around 2 pm. After visiting Camp Leakey, we boat down slowly to Nipa Palm Area where you can see beautiful fireflies at night when the weather is good. On the way there, we can still observe the monkeys, birds, and other animals. Dinner and sleep on the boat. (B, L, D)

Day 03: Kumai – Pangkalanbun Airport

Itinerary

Day 1 : PALANGKA RAYA – START CRUISE 

(Starts Tuesday)

Meet at Palangkaraya airport and transfer your boat in Palangkaraya harbour to start your journey. Cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue upriver along the forest lined river, passing villages. In the early evening, take a canoe through the shimmering black water lakes. Keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and Brahmini kites. Return to the boat for a quiet dinner in the midst of the jungle. [L/D]

Day 2 : BAPALLAS ISLAND – KANARAKAN

The boat moves up the Rungan River as you enjoy breakfast. On arrival to Bapallas Island, take a motorised canoe to observe orangutans.Learn about the BOSF rehabilitation programs. Leisurely lunch onboard while cruising to Kanarakan, a tiny riverside village on the Rungan River. Arriving in the afternoon, welcomed by the village elder with Dayak Ngaju welcoming ceremony then stroll around the village with a local host to see the village home gardens, rubber field & rubber tapping demonstration, and other village livelihoods. Visit to the elder’s house and enjoy the traditional spices coffee while sharing stories. Back to the boat and cruise down to Lake Tahai. Overnight. [B/L/D]

Day 3 : SEI GOHONG – MUARA RUNGAN

Optional dawn canoeing to the lake for bird watching. Leisurely breakfast on board as the boat pass the orangutan pre-release island of Pulau Kaja.Visit the village of Sei Gohong to meet the traditional medicine expert then a short walk to the nearby forest to find several plants that are used as traditional medications by the Ngajus.  Back to the village and see a larger collection of the traditional medicines and discuss their functions with the locals. Back to the boat and cruise down stream to Muara Rungan, passing Katimpun village. Overnight near Muara Rungan. [B/L/D]

Orangutan Tour Tanjung Puting Sekonyer RiverDay 4 : MUARA RUNGAN – SAMPIT – PANGKALANBUN – KUMAI

After breakfast, the boat cruises to Tanjung Sangalang for check out. Leave the boat early for air-conditioned car transfer to Sampit (approximately 3,5 hours),  to pick up the flight to Pangkalan Bun. On arrival at Pangkalan Bun airport, a guide will pick you up and then transfer to Kumai by taxi (approximately 30 minutes), passing several villages. Upon arrival in Kumai, boat moves up the river to explore the great mangrove, nipah palm, and wildlife along the Sekonyer river while lunch is prepared on the boat.  Late afternoon, observe the proboscis monkey and other primates along the river. Orangutan Tour Tanjung PutingDay 5 : CAMP LEAKEY – BOAT/LODGE

After breakfast board the klotok to travel up river for about 21⁄2 hours boating and then up a side creek to Camp Leakey where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest and also known as research center for Orangutan. Trekking through tropical rainforest searching for wildlife, wild orangutan, birds and other primate as well as tropical jungle plant. Back to the boat for lunch then witness feeding time at 2 pm for old rehabilitation orangutan given additional foods. Overnight on the boat.

DAY 6    PONDOK TANGGUY – PESALAT – TANJUNG HARAPAN – BOAT/LODGE

After breakfast, boat down the river to Pondok Tanggui which is a rehabilitation center for the ex-captive orangutans and see feeding time around 9 am. Continue to Pesalatwhere we will have the opportunity to trek in the forest to observe the wildlife and see reforestation project. We can also plant a baby tree there (donate to help the project).In the afternoon, visit Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center to witness another feeding time around 3 pm. After that, we may visit a village near the national park. Boat down the river to the Nipah palm area where we can see the beautiful fireflies when the weather is good. Overnight on the boat. Day 7 : TANJUNG PUTING – KUMAI – DEPARTURE TO AIRPORT
