It was built in 18th century by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I and finished in Sultan Hamengkubuwono II era. Before functioned as royal garden, it was known as bathing place for princesses of Keraton Yogyakarta. Then after it was constructed Taman Sari became a wide complex consists of 59 buildings including meditation chamber, mosque, swimming pools, and 18 water gardens and pavilions with artificial lake.

Taman Sari Water Castle Jogja though was built in Javanese style, in fact also took some Europeans architecture under the order of the first architect Tumenggung Mangundipura who has travelled to Batavia twice to learn about European architecture. After Java War during 1825 – 1830 and earthquake in 1867, the complex destroyed in many parts and now only the bathing complex has been completely restored.

Taman Sari is divided into four areas. The first will be the artificial lake called Segaran Lake. The second is the bathing complex called Umbul Binangun. The third area is gone and the forth is in the east of Umbul Binangun.

Nowadays the place that included in the Taman Sari Water Castle Yogyakarta tours is the bathing complex and artificial lake, the long tunnel into the underground mosque, Sumur Gumuling (the underground tunnel), and the ruins of Pulo Kenongo near Ngasem Traditional Market.
